Stash - New York artist
New post about the legendary artist. And as always the video at the end.
On the work of Stash, a whole generation of graffiti growers, and he himself is considered a legend of New York street art. Young Josh Franklin (real name of the artist), whose works were exhibited in the 1980s along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, began with the painting of subway cars and tunnels - Stash from childhood admired such vivid graffiti - but in the world of art, like many others , Did not leave right away. He painted on trains until 1987, only after he started writing on canvas and exhibited in galleries. Next, Stash tightly engaged in the design of clothing, which is still doing well. In the 1990s, he collaborated with Nike, Bathing Ape (Bape), Vans, DC Shoes, Clarks, Sebago, Lacoste and others, and then created his own brand of street clothes called Recon, which lasted until 2011, and then reborn in a new Appearance and became a brand of sneakers.
This summer, Stash was invited to Moscow, to the festival Faces & Laces, which was held in Gorky Park on August 10-11. Find another person, so close to the street clothes industry and at the same time most street art, is hardly possible. Therefore, he was chosen as the curator for the new series of sneakers Reebok called City Classics. We asked him a couple questions about the project.
Street art has always been associated with spontaneity, freedom and any lack of framework and rules. Your freedom of creativity is nevertheless enclosed in some framework when you work under a contract?
Stash : No, it is not concluded for one simple reason - the City Classics project is a space that allows these frameworks to break and go beyond our personal freedoms. I'm just one person from the whole team that is working on this project, but it's great that we all go together to the same goal that we share, we have the same interests and vision of things. Therefore, it is rather not a restriction of our freedoms, but a support for each other to create a radically new one.
