Before the era of vaccines (before the 20th century) there were very high mortality rates among people. Pretty much every disease was a potential killer. True, vaccines may not be perfect, there is a way to go perfecting them, but today it is much more likely that a kid will make it into adulthood than what it was in the 17th century.
