Ruth Gottesman (93 years old) is a professor emerita at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. When her husband died at the age of 96, he left her a stock portfolio worth approximately three billion dollars. He instructed her to "do whatever you think is right with it." She promptly decided to make a donation of one billion dollars to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine for the purpose of permanently eliminating the tuition fees that have heretofore been charged by the college.

When you read the BBC's article on the matter, you should be sure to watch the 44-second video clip (at the top of the article) that captures the electrifying moment when Professor Gottesman announced to the assembled students what she had done.

I will here add one detail that is not included in the BBC's report. When the administrators of the Albert Einstein College suggested to Professor Gottesman that the college could be renamed after her husband and her, she not only rebuffed the suggestion; in addition, she attached to her donation the condition that the college never be renamed.
