The ringleaders among the followers of the Mad King were the three lords of his private council: Qarlton Chelsted, Counselor of the Currency, Lucerys Velaryon, Advisor of Boats, and Symond Staunton, Counselor of Laws. The eunuch Varys, Counselor of Rumors, and Sapiencia Rossart, the great master of the Guild of Alchemists, also enjoyed the confidence of the king.

Prince Rhaegar was supported by the youngest men at court: Lord Jon Connington, Ser Myles Mooton of Poza Maiden and Ser Richard Lonmouth.
