What's wrong with Google search, and what I plan to do about it...

in #google7 years ago

Hi! My name is Jonathan Wright. I want to share some of my thoughts with you about the way search engines work and how we can make them better. I hope you find the experience valuable and thought-provoking.

WWW

There is a ton of content on the World Wide Web, as we all know. A simple Google search for "How To Paint a Shed" yields an incredible thirty-eight million five-hundred thousand (38,500,000) results. Each individual person wants to show, tell, and explain their way of doing it through blogging, commenting, or videos. If you were truly trying to find out how to do this, would you really need to see all thirty-eight million pages before learning how to do it? I think the obvious answer is no, but if not, why are there thirty-eight million results available to view? Is this how search was meant to be? Is this how search should continue to be?

Allow me to paint a mental picture for you. You know that moment when you're searching for "How to start a tattoo shop" and you end up having to comb through the badly written and vague articles of eHow and other "how-to" websites? Or having to watch 6 different 20 minute videos of people talking about their kids or their jobs, and finally half way through the video, they get to the explanation, which ends up being the only information you already knew because it's common sense!? Frustrating! Yeah, I've been there too. So has almost everyone else.

Now, I have a question for you: Why is this entire process of hunting for the most relevant and helpful information necessary at all considering the millions of dollars Google has spent on developing algorithms to filter and display the best content? I wanted to find a way to eliminate wasting precious time on these things by creating a solution that would be available to everyone. But first, let's take a closer look at content creation.

CONTENT CREATION

Currently, the focus of countless websites, blogs and videos is CONTENT CREATION, which is to create "valuable" content that people need and want, then climb through the rankings over time to the coveted #1 spot on Google for your keyword. (yay!) Acquiring that #1 position will fulfill the purpose of gaining an audience online as a means of revenue generation through various ads and/or product sales. Then, duplicate that process over and over with new keywords and new content. Round and round it goes! This is the endless cycle of CONTENT CREATION. That's how we ended up with 38,500,000 search results for painting a shed.

THE SOLUTION

I'm going to mention a phrase that you might have never heard before in your life.
CONTENT CURATION. Have you seen any websites doing this? It's where you build a collection of high quality content that other people have already created. This is the sole purpose of BestHowToWebsite. We manually search through pages of videos, articles and blog posts, collect a few of the best, and post them on a single page. We have no interest whatsoever in content creation, because we understand there is no new content to create and a ton of existing content that needs to be organized. I thought, "If I can display a few videos and a few articles on one easy to navigate page, it would save so much time."

WHAT TO EXPECT

Moving forward, we are going to start page by page, video by video, post by post, hand pick the best of the best and put them on display for the world to see. As you might have guessed, our focus is on how-to search queries because it was the category that became such a pain point for me personally as well a huge time-waster and so many people can benefit from our work in this area. Although it will be a tough and tedious journey, the destination will most definitely be worth it.

I welcome you to the beginning.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Wright
