GOOD NEWS! Norway banned deforestationsteemCreated with Sketch.

On May 2016, Norway announced its commitment to attain zero deforestation. The groundbreaking move means that the nation pledges to ban any product in its supply chain that contributes to the deforestation of rainforests through the government’s public procurement policy.

This is an important victory in the fight to protect our planet's lungs. Over the last few years, several Norwegian companies have committed to cease the procurement of goods that can be linked to destruction of the rainforest. Their commitments are now matched by the Norwegian state, that pledges to reach the same demands when it comes to the public supply chain.

At the UN Climate Summit in New York in 2014, Norway, Germany and the U.K. pledged to “promote national commitments that encourage deforestation-free supply chains,” through public procurement policies and sustainably sourced products like palm oil, soy, beef and timber. Indeed, the production of these goods in seven countries with high deforestation rates (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea) contributed to 40 percent of total tropical deforestation and 44 percent of associated carbon emissions between 2000 and 2011.

Furthermore, in 2008, Norway gave Brazil — which is home to 60 percent of the Amazon — $1 billion to help fight deforestation. And Brazil lived up to its promise, reducing deforestation by no less than 75 percent in 6 years, saving more than 33,000 square miles of forest and keeping 3.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. According to National Geographic, it's a three time bigger impact than removing all the cars in the US from the circulation.

Norway reaffirmed this June its leading role in the safeguard of the rainforest by threatening Brazil to suspend the $1 billion fund if the deforestation rate was to go up again.

There is still a lot to do for our planet to recover from its scars, but this is a very important first step that will hopefully be followed by the other countries that participated in the UN Climate Summit and many others.

Very good news. Thanks for sharing.

that´s definitely good news ;)
didn´t know about their payment to Brasil. and I also didn´t know that it actually slowed deforestation there! very well reasearched

Thank you =) I'll keep doing my best!

This is the best new I ever heard! For years, global warming. The gradual heating of Earth's surface, oceans and atmosphere brings worst impact to farmers.

This is what should every country must do " attain zero deforestation".
