5 myths about gold

in #gold3 years ago

Gold has always been seen as precious. It's been assigned magic properties to make it even more desirable; gold is surrounded by myths and legends — some of which are completely unfounded. We'll bust some of these myths to understand more about gold jewelry.

Myth no.1: quality jewelry is made of pure gold

Truth: pure gold isn't resistant enough, so jewelry is made of an alloy. The hallmark will tell you the proportion: for example, '585' means that there's 58.5% gold and 41.5% of other metals.

Myth no.2: real gold jewelry is yellow

Jewelry's color has nothing to do with its gold contents or purity. It's achieved by adding various metals to the alloy: for example, white gold items contain nickel or palladium.

Myth no.3: white gold is more expensive than yellow gold

The price of gold jewelry depends on its purity, not color. If a yellow and a white item have the same gold content ratio (like 585), their price should be the same, all other things being equal. However, a white gold ornament can be more expensive if it contains palladium to give it its color.

Myth no.4: gold is hypoallergenic

This statement is only partially true. Gold doesn't oxidize, so it doesn't produce an oxide that could provoke a reaction. But, as we've seen, gold jewelry also contains other metals, and they might cause allergies or irritation.

Myth no.5: diamonds are used only in platinum jewelry

Platinum is rare and very expensive, so jewelers often replace it with white gold — and add gems, including diamonds.
