"The Pirates!" by Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt - review

I will start with an absolutely unnecessary finding - Aardman are uniquely good! This is for those who hesitate to watch an animation - "Wallace and Gromit" and "Chicken Run" are classics that can be compared to "Nightmares before Christmas" and not quite (in a very different genre and themes) fit into the Hollywood notions of commerce. So - to come to the word: if you miss - you will be sorry! In this haunted story, from the middle of the 19th century, on the scenario of Gideon Defoe, directors Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt - persecutions in the open sea and sky, battles and bugs, royal audience and scientific conference, a show with prizes and at all ... any adventures. The first shot of the film made me hold my breath - I just imagined the camera going over the roofs of the tiny Victorian London and entering the royal hall, by the magnificent candlelight with the detailed candles, all created by a human hand, arranged, illuminated, lived! Their hat drops down the wizards that create stop-motion animation - no such work!

Having met with the neurotic Vicky who "hates pirates!", It's time to meet the "bumper band" of the title - a diverse collection of true friends of Captain Pirate, who will do his best to win the pirate thirsty trophy "Pirate of the Year". In order to defeat Black Bellamy and Liz Kama's rivals, Captain Pirate made several risky moves that included Charles Darwin's research ship diving in London's mist in order to present Captain's pet Polly to a gang of scientists, but -the bumps for acquiring unrivaled riches from the English Treasury and participating in a unique show ... It will not be fair to tell the end - first, because the children who will be most interesting to them can not read yet; and secondly, because the adults who will bring their children to the cinema will not be impressed by the story (with tidal waves or rather with holes in the hull) and the details! Some of them are really mind-boggling - the fuss with the dressed-tamed monkey, the pursuit of the foam-filled (and pirated) bath on the floors of the Darwin House, the musical accent in the demo of the favorite don (I will not spoil it !), the appearance of the Pirate King (not true, just!), knitting two hooks, replicas for the servants and evolution ( that's why he's got some ideas from a famous scientist!)

Hugh Grant makes such an unexpected step away from his winding career that I sincerely envied him how he had fun while working on the film. A capricious and enthusiast who desires to be in the spotlight and under the spotlight, Captain Pirate is like a mirror to the owner of his voice. And then they'll tell me that the other animation studios have drawn their characters in the vision of the actors who sound them - surely, but is not it much harder to breathe such an impressive image of a tiny miniature... And if you have not decided yet to give the Pirates a chance! Do not think too much about it and take some time for unconventional and interesting animation, funny adventures for children and very entertaining winks for adults, garnished with a unique English sense of humor. You may not like everything, but fun is guaranteed.

@godflesh, this is one of the best animations ever created. I loved the fact that the main character ("the pirate") had to be saved by a little wild bird that people in UK took to be so precious! Thanks for sharing this review. It was a total reminisce.

I have never heard of this film. I will keep an eye out for it. Off the subject a little bit; I recently watched "Isle of Dogs." I think that's a great stop motion film.

Oh, yes! "Isle of Dogs" is a real masterpiece! It's probably one of the best stop motion films I've ever seen :)

You like it better than "fatnastic Mr. Fox? ( I assume you have seen it.)
