Thoughts On The Verse

Love! In the week of Valentine's Day, we want to remember the real meaning of love. Without the motivation and expression of love, all "Christian" activities are more "activity" than Christian. Love is the expression of Christ's character and presence in our lives through deeds done for others. So don't get lost in the annual trip down sentimental lane. Too many of us forget the needed daily dose of love that so often gets lost in the grit of day-to-day relationships. Let's be loving year round and thus show ourselves to be Jesus' disciples. (cf. John 13:34-35)

If I might add my own thoughts, let us also remember that God IS love (1 John 4:8). Not just that He embodies it, but that the essence of love comes from Him because He is 100% love. When we look to what love is, we need only to remember that God sent His Son to live a life that sinful Man could not, and then to take upon the wrath deserved for a people in rebellion against Him so that they might be reconciled to Him. No greater love is than that of this - that truly holy God has brought near those who are undeserving of Him in their diametric opposition to Him, the full benefits of now being full sons and daughters found in Him! What love is this! Might we embrace such radical selfless affection and worth upon undeserving others this coming season in light of our mere rememberance of God's completed work.
