Plastic Eating Fungus

Hi, my Steemian friends. I just thought it would be nice to share with you an article that was posted in my FB page. I just can't help but think that, somehow, the Lord is behind all this and is now doing something to help us with our problems.

Think of a fungus that eats plastic. Is this possible? If this can be harnessed and developed, a global solution to plastic waste which threatens to destroy our ecosystem within the near future can be found.

But, be inspired and excited!!! There is indeed one variety, the Aspergillus tubingensis, which grows in Pakistan, that has been observed to be doing just that. Plastics take hundreds of years to decompose. Yet, everyday, plastic is being dumped almost everywhere, especially in the ocean, where they are eaten by fishes and other larger marine creatures. In fact, plastics have been found in dead sea creatures like sharks and dolphins aside from fishes.

Plastic residues have also been found in rock salt. As you know, rock salt is produced by dehydrating sea water and harvesting the salt crystals that are formed once the sea water dries up.

Pretty soon, plastic residues will be found in almost everything we eat that comes from the ocean. And as we ingest this, we expose ourselves to the dangers of the toxins and its side effects.

This research is indeed very heart-warming and welcome news and truly gives hope to us, mankind, that we, with the help of the Almighty, can still be able to overcome this global crisis that threatens our existence in the coming years.
