GitHub "buried" 21 TB of the most important IT projects of mankind for 1000 years

in #github4 years ago

The creators of the service for hosting IT projects Github announced the implementation of the GitHub Archive project. A backup copy of all active public repositories on the site was safely hidden deep in the Arctic so that future generations of humanity, even after 1000 years, would not lose their knowledge of the modern world.

Photographs of the code of projects, including Bitcoin, Linux, Python, etc., were recorded on tape media, which retain information for 1000 years.

Each reel includes a copy of the GitHub code repository guide in five world languages. Another reel contains the technical history and cultural value of the content. The archive also contains works that explain the foundations of modern computer science, computing and open source development. According to the initiators of the project, this will allow future generations to understand what the modern world was like, and even recreate computers and technologies if necessary.

The archive is located in an abandoned coal mine at a depth of 250 m on the island of Spitsbergen, Norway. It is reported that nothing will happen to him, even in the event of a nuclear war or the use of electromagnetic weapons.
