RE: The Present Gift - Learning to live in the moment

in #gift8 years ago

Frequently thinking about the future allows you to anticipate and plan, however, you will often miss out on the gift of the present... My mind is constantly flooded with thoughts and ideas, and I miss out on what really matters, the present.

What you said here resonates quite strongly with my own life. Some people find it hard to come up with ideas. I find it hard to stop the flow of ideas constantly going through my brain. My wife complains that even when I try to spend quality time with my family, I'm often not "there". I find it hard to ignore my phone notifications or stop checking on my cryptocurrency investments every 10 minutes to see if prices have changed. Sometimes I get a faraway look in my eye as I mentally evaluate new investment opportunities and potential blog topics.

Recently I went on a vacation to Malaysia where Internet access was sporadic at best, so I was forced to leave my phone off for long stretches of time. At first it felt weird, but then it was so relaxing to unwind and unplug from the constant barrage of technological distractions that have come to define my life. I loved being forced to immerse myself in the raw visceral NOW, and was a bit sad when it was time to come home and plug back in again.

Living life in the present is one of the hardest things for me to do, but its an area of personal weakness I want to try hard to improve, for the sake of my family. Thank you for this nice reminder that the journey matters more than the destination. You've got yourself a new follower.

Thanks for sharing your story @cryptomancer. Yes, this too is one of my weaknesses and something I need to constantly remind myself as well.
