New Baby Calf On The Homestead

Hey everyone! I hope all is going well in your part of the world. On our homestead, we have been getting mid 50s one day and then low 20s the next. Which has caused us to take extra precautions for our newest little addition to the homestead.

We have a few heifers that got bred a little later than we would have liked. Usually, we like for them to calve in the Spring (around April or early May), so it makes the birth about a month and a half early. She was exhibiting signs of getting close like bagging up and acting a little different, so we decided to move her into a section of the barn by herself Sunday evening.

Well during the early hours of Monday morning, one of our Dexter cattle finally had her calf and it was a little girl. Her coat color is lighter red and is as friendly as can be. Today, we saw here nursing well and even got to see a few binky’s from the young calf.

Now, I know the above pictures are not the best, since they were taken from inside our barn. We are going to leave the new mom and her baby in here for a few days before we put them with the rest of the herd. This will allow the calf to get a little more sure-footed and to ride out some of this close to zero temperatures and strong winds. When we do, I will try to get a few better photos to share with all of you.
