Dragon Tongue Beans

in #ghsc6 years ago

Hey everyone! A few days ago, I was talking about we are trying to expand what we grow in our garden. I believe in that post it was the herb dill and poblano peppers. Then previously, I wrote about how we were trying Dragon’s Egg cucumbers. Since there are several new things, I think this might be a cool series. So for today, I was going to highlight another plant that we started growing this year.

This is one of the many new types of beans that we ordered through Baker’s Creek. The variety is called Dragon’s Tongue beans. We heard about this bean late last year, when we went to a local pre civil war festival about the conflict between the Native Americans and early settlers in the early 1800s. This is a festival that we go to every year and we always learn something new each time. This time we were talking to someone who was telling us about some of the things that the Native’s grew. For some reason the name stood out and we thought we would see if we could find some seeds. The first photo is just a regular picture.

Well luck for us, Baker’s Creek was selling them and, at that point, we thought this would be something really interesting to try. I am really glad we did. These beans really catch the eye with their purple stripes and make picking them much easier. Haha! In conjunction with the stripes, when the plant flowers, they have purple blooms that give you a sign of the delicious beans to come. They start out looking like an average bean and then later get their stripes. In the next picture the top bean is what they look like when they are younger and the bottom ones are what they are supposed to eventually look like. This one is in vivid color because I feel it better represents what they actually look like in person.

We have eaten them raw and cannot honestly tell a big difference in taste from generic green beans. When you cook them, the purple stripes fade and look like a normal bean. I think these beans really stand out when eaten raw and adds a lot of life to the plates. We have really enjoyed them and I know they will be something that we will grow again next year. If you are looking to add something a little more exciting to what you grow, then I would recommend checking into the Dragon’s Tongue beans from Baker’s Creek. Also if there are local reenactments in your area, go to them because you never know what you will learn.
