Dragon Egg Cucumber

in #ghsc8 years ago (edited)

Hey everyone! I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend. Today, I was going to take some time to talk a little bit about one of the new plants that we were trying this year in our garden. The plant being Dragon Egg Cucumbers.

To be honest, it was the name that peaked our interest. We usually stick to growing the conventional looking cucumbers, but this year we decided to branch out and try a few new things when placing an order through Baker’s Creek. It just recently started producing and I wanted to show it to all of you. There are several others I would like to review and show you, so this is just the beginning. Here is what they look like.

(This is just a snippet of information from the Baker’s Creek seed packet.)

This variety originates from Croatia and has the capabilities for large yields. The cucumbers themselves are more of a white or possibly a cream in color and the ideal time to pick them is when they are the size of a large egg. They are mild, bitter-free and sweet tasting.

Here they are compared to one of our other cucumbers.

Just from the looking at the plants, they are growing and doing much better than our regular cucumbers. The plants are much, much healthier and are absolutely full of blooms. I am surprised at how well they have done in spite of the lack of rain fall we have gotten and they do not taste a whole lot different than some of the more generic varieties of cucumbers. We have come to rather enjoy their taste and I think this one will be a keeper that will be replanted next year. We are even thinking about even possibly trying to pickle some of them to see how they do. The only thing that we may do different next year is to possibly try trellising them because of how fast they are growing for us. If you are interested adding and trying some different things in your garden, I would recommend that you give these a look.

Thanks for reading!

I'd be curious to see how they do as pickles. (It's how most of our cukes are eaten.) Any cross sectional views? I'd be interested in seeing their seediness...

Next time we go to cut one, I will try to make sure to get a picture and put it here. Just from the couple we have eaten, I have not noticed a large amount of seeds. I would say that they are very comparable to other cucumbers.

I am kind of excited to try them as pickled because I think they would be kind of neat to look at in a food pantry. Haha! Thanks for stopping by!

Here is a picture from Baker's Creek Rare Seeds website. Hope this helps!

Hey! I've grown those before! Very cool!

Thanks @papa-pepper! They are pretty cool to eat and grow for sure. How did you like them? Did you try to pickle them? I have been getting into some of these odd seeds from Baker's Creek and I think I will be trying a few more this next year. Haha! Thanks for stopping by!

I have grown these cucumbers from Baker Creek in previous years. They are perfect especially if you are gardening with children. They really do look like dragon eggs ... okay, maybe just what I imagine dragon eggs should look like :-)

Haha! Yeah that is what I was thinking. There were a few other odd things that we tried and I think we will get a few other obscure things. Did you try to pickle any? We were thinking about trying to pickle some of the smaller ones, but I was wanting to see if anyone had any success doing it or not.

No, I don't like pickles, so never pickled them. It would look pretty cool though in a jar.

First I've ever seen or heard of these! Great that they do so well. you'd think they'd be more popular if they cope better than the regular cucumber

Yeah, some of the stuff we got, we only saw by scrolling through Baker's Creek rare seeds. I really do not see that much of a difference between them and the regular cucumbers. The only difference is that the Dragon's Egg plants seem to be doing better with our drier summer.
