Homemade Nesting Boxes
Last night, my husband came home early to get a couple projects done, one of them being the chickens’ nesting boxes. We already had an idea of how we were going to construct this structure. It was just a matter of finding the pieces to put together.
We dug around in our scrap wood pile and found this nice, long pallet sitting at the bottom. Hmm, the spacing looks about right for our buckets. Tried it out, perfect fit! Ok, almost perfect. We just had to cut the pallet down to size and modify one of the boards to fit the last couple of buckets. Not too hard.
After cutting with the circular saw, it was time to screw boards together. But where is the cordless screwdriver? What was going to be a fast and easy project turned into a longer and more frustrating task than we thought. Only because no one can remember where tools get left behind. My husband drove back and forth to his parents’ place twice looking for what he needed. His dad was the last to use the tool. I know where my husband gets his bad memory from...
Fast forward about a half hour, and now we can finally finish up. Using scrap 2x4’s and 2x6’s for a brace, our nesting box shelf has legs. Phew! Now to place it all in the coop, furnish the buckets with straw, and see how our hens like them!
I saw @papa-pepper post on his nesting boxes yesterday. Call me biased, but I like ours better :)

Looks simple...not counting on the time it took to find the tools! :-)
Now you'll have to show us what they look like while in use!
Those darn tools I tell ya!
I’ll put that down on my video list. Internet says they don’t lay until 5 months old, so it won’t be until November?
Those are really cool looking nesting boxes
Thanks! They turned out slightly different than we planned, but having a pallet was a nice surprise!
Look like some great nesting boxes!
Thank you! I don’t think I’ve seen this design before so we’ll see how it works!
ooohhh..better than papa-peppers? that's like blasphemy! lol. how's it goin hebrewhousewife? the thing looks great, the tools situation was funny because it's so typical for farmers, totally true.
we had so many lost tools, both manual and power, that we'd just buy more, that way if the original showed back up or got found we'd have a backup.
but do the hens like them? they might not until they need them, I don't know, not a chicken person!
good job though, God bless you guys!
Lol he won’t mind will he?
All farmers must be the same huh? Every time my husband can’t find a tool, I ask him how does he manage to get anything done? He says they have too much on their mind to remember where they left their tools. They just go out and buy another one. Sigh, and he says I spend all the money?!
They probably won’t start using them until November timeframe. We have the Brahma variety of chickens, which are a bigger variety. We looked up what size nests they need and one site said 18” cube. But another site said they used 12” cube and he had 3 birds cuddle up in there! So we shall see how this goes.
howdy there hebrewhousewife! well this should be interesting. what if they don't like them? oh that's no problem is it, you'll just have more posting material, show ya'll making new ones.
that's hilarious about the tools. it's a universal farmers problem.
How cool! I hope then hens like and use them! :D
I bought lime green tools. Harder to lose, but sometimes I still manage! If I have to hand screw something, it waits till the screw gun pops up lol
I think I'm going to copy you. Work lets us take the empty buckets sometimes, so I'll see if I can score a half dozen or so. That's a great idea!
I’m starting to think some things were just destined to get lost lol. Oh man, I don’t have patience to wait for a tool to show up.
I found the idea on Pinterest and thought what a neat, cheap idea! I’ll be watching to see what you decide to do.
Just got permission from my manager to take home seven empty five gallon buckets. That may be overkill, so I'll probably only use five. Now I have a weekend project! :D
Sweet! Can’t wait to see how it turns out :)
In the beginning there were buckets!
Just posted it :)
This is fantastic! Do the chickens like them?
