Tin Cup: A rom com that doesn't suck
Remember when Kevin Costner was a big deal? How about Don Johnson? It was 1996 and this movie was a real winner then. I believe it still is.

The movie poster makes it look cheesy as can be and in parts of the movie, it definitely is
The story follows Roy McAvoy (Kostner,) a man with very little ambition who lives in a trailer and runs a small run-down driving range that doubles as a golf school. A woman comes in one day for a golf lesson and McAvoy gives the lesson and also (unsuccessfully) flirts with her. It turns out she is the girlfriend of a PGA player named David Simms (Don Johnson,) who also happens to be a college golf teammate of McAvoy's.
Simms comes in the ask McAvoy to be his caddy at an upcoming PGA event and Roy agrees. However, they get into an argument on the course where Roy embarrasses David by placing a shot better than the PGA pro, and Roy gets himself fired.

Thus begins the long path or Roy McAvoy's pursuit of winning the PGA tour and also stealing David's girlfriend. When I think about it our hero is actually a pretty terrible person but the story presents it the opposite way. The steps necessary to get on the PGA tour is actually quite difficult (as one would expect) and Roy's attempts at getting in are kept funny, especially with the addition of his friend and caddie "Romeo," who is played by Cheech Marin.

I'm not going to lie, I sometimes like rom-coms, i sometimes hate them, but this one is a real winner because it is kept interesting because mostly the film is about reclaiming your life rather than stealing your rival's girl. It kind of says something about all of us, perhaps there is something we are really good at but we just aren't motivated to try - which was definitely the case with Roy McAvoy.
I intentionally chose this trailer because it's overdubbed in German, which makes it funnier to me
I have no idea how much money it made, but it was number one at the box office for a while (in 1996, that is.) I think this is worth a look, particularly if you play golf from time to time
Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves, The Untouchables) is a great actor, in my opinion, but most critics and some people don't like him because he takes too many "hero" roles. For those people, Tin Cup is a movie you will like, for those who like Costner, you will love this film. Cosnter plays a local star golfer in Texas who runs a driving range that isn't doing well. He's a good golfer, but because of some poor decisions never turned professional. He has a lazy life goofing around with his friends and caddy, wonderfully played by Cheech Marin (Paulie, From Dusk Til Dawn). One day when a beautiful psychiatrist, played by Rene Russo (Ransom, Major League), comes in to take lessons from him, he decides to go after her. The problem is that she isn't grungy and lazy like he is and she's dating a professional golfer who went to college with Costner. He is well-played by Don Johnson (Dead Bang, Guilty as Sin). Costner and Johnson hate each other and soon get into competitions to impress Russo. Eventually, Costner decides to impress her he'll try and qualify for the US Open golf tournament. This is a very funny film and was not a "chick-flick" like I was worried it would be. Costner is excellent in the lead playing a completely likable slob. Russo is solid as his love interest. Highly recommended.
Dude, you are an amazing writer. You beat me again!
This would be an interesting one to watch, am not surprised i hvn't come across this yet i was probably too young when it came out or had pure interest for action movies only. I will check it out
Wow it was a great movie. It was about getting and lossing girlfriend and funny also.
Old is gold.
Well, we all need something to motivate us for us to be able to do what we never think we can, I the lady in question was the motivation behind Roy McAvoy ambition....
TIN CUP han! very awesome trailer and a brilliant story Roy McAvoy played a brilliant role there in fighting to regain prestige and also to impress that lady Rene Russo. it includes some comedy as well, which makes it even more interesting. whatever i coukld understand from the story is that it is interesting. so i willl go watch it.
All of us have to do something that we need to reach the top of our success so that we have high expectations, good mindedness, willpower. Then we will be successful. woman ray McAvoy was strong in his will because of which he was going to do it.
Water World... i watched nearly more than 10 times at that time.
Roy McCoy has played a wonderful character in this TIN CUP MOVIE. Russo's character was also a significant one as she was the reason behind Roy McAvoy's ambitious struggle to become a better golfer to impress her. The comedy in the movie adds a good blend to it. Great movie. Thanks for sharing.
