Chef (film): a commercial and critical success

in #getyerlearnon6 years ago

I am normally pretty excited when a movie about high-end cooking comes out. This is the same reason why I will watch the Food Network knowing damn well that there is no way I am going to be able to cook those things. I do not have the tools, access to materials, or well, skill to do a vast majority of what is on there. I do, however, sincerely admire the people that do posses this ability and that is why I enjoy watching it. I don't know if Jon Favreau is actually a good cook or not, i presume he is a to a certain degree.

I mean, he would have to be at least somewhat adept at culinary skills because he wrote, directed, co-produced, and starred in this movie. You can't exactly do that without some level of knowledge.

The story follows Carl Casper (Favreau,) the head chef at a popular and high-end restaurant in California. While incredibly good at his craft and effortlessly commanding the respect of the kitchen staff, he continually butts heads with the owner, who is ultimately in charge of what goes on there. After designing and innovative menu in preparation for the arrival of a food critic, the owner decides to scrap the new menu and stick to "the classics" at the last minute. This results in a poor review of the restaurant and by extension Carl Casper.

Thus begins a string of events that eventually result in Carl confronting the food critic publically, which ends up being recorded and going viral, thus destroying his legacy,

Without revealing too much of the story let's just say he decides to go back to his roots in Miami and ends up reconnecting with his son (Casper and the boy's mother are divorced,) and also returning to much simpler food preparation with the help of his son and one of the other assistant chefs from his old restaurant named Martin played by John Leguizamo.)

It is a heartwarming tale of falling and picking yourself back up again and that is all fine and dandy. The real appeal to me was simply watching the preparation of various dishes. Warning: Do not watch this movie unless you are already painfully full. Watching this movie while even a bit peckish is simply torturous.

I don't remember who said it but one particular critic called this film "food porn." It made more than $30 million profit. not too shabby eh?

A feel good, warm movie. Re-watchable..!

I love it, I was so inspired after watching this movie that I was ready to get a food truck and start my own journey around Australia. I learned from life experiences that in order to succeed I have to fail first and when I come back I’m stronger than before. This is why I loved watching this movie. Thanks for sharing @gooddream

I can't help feeling that this movie is not only about a chef finding himself, but it's also about lead actor/director Jon Favreau trying to get back in touch with the kind of films he used to make -- small ones without guys wearing super-suits or cowboys drawing down on aliens. Here, Favreau's Carl Casper quits his big Iron Restaurant job and rediscovers himself, and his passion for food and family, by running a Chef-sized food truck. Results: excellent.

Films like this can be lost if the wrong kid is cast. Emjay Anthony is the right kid. He's great as Percy. I particularly enjoyed the way the film handled Percy's internet-savviness, and how he used it. John Leguizamo is a great fit as Carl's friend and sous-chef. Sofia Vergara as Carl's ex- wife is, as usual, capable and stunning.

See Chef, and bear witness as a good filmmaker continues his journey to becoming a great one.

The film was extremely light, volatile, beautiful and enjoyable. At least thanks to splendid scenes of cooking dishes and their execution, which is fending off close-UPS aroused pretty big appetite. In fact, like the very atmosphere of the tape seasoned with Latin music set up for a pleasant pastime lasting 100 minutes.
Surprisingly, against all this, even the most important advantage of the tape in the face of a luxurious cast becomes extremely unimportant and secondary element of the tape. Himself Jon Favreau looks good in a selected manner. Emjay Anthony looks quite nice in the image of the son of the protagonist, and John Leguizamo his charisma is thus the mood in the description of the picture as "the movie-mood" and the only Sofia Vergara absolutely does not look in the image of the former wife of the protagonist and the mother of a small child. The way her and there's nothing you can do about it.
The composition of the stars invited to the picture is also pleasing. Let the picture and a little Scarlett Johansson, Oliver Platt and Dustin Hoffman, they produce only the most pleasant impression when viewing. In fact, like Robert Downey Jr., who did more than just a favor to the Director, who revived his career "Iron Man". After all, in fact, it is Robert's character is the most charismatic, though extremely episodic character in the whole picture.

The Chef is a rare example of a tape which does not cause neither laughter, nor tears, does not force to think of something or stupidly stares at the events on the screen. This is the "mood film". Bright, colorful, light, airy and juicy. Actually, as well as dishes that are prepared by the on-screen chef performed by John Favreau.

After reading you post i will narrate a negative role of the society. As it belongs to divorce. Divorce is a critical matter which is happening in the world. The ratio of divorced women is increasing day by day. Some divorces are beerable but some not.
In Europe divorce is not considered as bad impact. The woman can live a happy life without his husband.
But on the other hand in Asia ,the divorce leave bad impacts in the life of a woman. A divorced woman cant do marriage again. No one is ready to marriage with a divorced woman. Sorry, our topic is about food. Let's discuss about food.
As food is the major component for healthy body so everyone loves to food. To be a cheff is a great experience. I like cooking personally. I saw many programs about cooking. Sometime I follow them and try to make dish.but when it's ready to eat, it looks different one that i was gonna to wish 😂.

It was nice to see Favreau return to the small scale Swingers type indie setup that made his name, after those huge CGI Hollywood movies.

You can tell how loved Favreau is in the industry by the number of massive Hollywood stars willing to take a pay cut to be in this. I loved how "Iron Man," Robert Downey Jr, reunited with Favreau, having done two Iron Man movies together.

Favreau famously used to be fat, then lost a ton of weight, so heaven knows how he coped with so much food porn. Food porn always makes me want to eat. I think the Stanley Tucci movie "Big Night," is my favorite one.

As usual with Favreau projects, there is always something humorous and down to earth in dialogue exchanges. For example, the way Leguizamo's character joked about "cerveza" being better than beer, to get a kid to taste it, and of course, like any kid, he hates it anyway.

This is a loveable cameo-boosted, wittily written, family movie that may not be super original, following a tried and true formula, but it's sweetness and charm is utterly winning and endlessly rewatchable.

My second favorite food movie. :)

I heard that this movie is a semi-autobiographical to Favreau's life. A good analogy of how he stepped down from directing major studio films and went to create Chef on a smaller budget... How critics despised his work, how his busy life affecting his relationship with his son...
