10 foods you should try from a german supermarked
Malzbier
german rootbeer, sweet bitter and fizzy. Some say we only invented this to get kids to like beer from an early stage and what can i say, it works well. Nevertheless, rootbeer tastes delicious and is a great refreshment for hot summerdays.
Handkäse
I admit, this one is tricky We also call it Stinkekäse which means stinkycheese. And yes it smells a lot but served with onions and an oil and vinegar vinnegrette it is the perfect sidedisch for some fresh bread. It`s a regional dish from Hessen, but if you get the chance to lay your hands on it and try it, i can only recommand it.
Bread
Germans are known for their many bread types, currently over 1300 and if you go shopping in a supermarked, try to find one with a bakery. Eat yourselfes through the deliciousness of carbs and gluten. Don`t be afraid to buy the dark ones with the hard crust, they are amazing for savoury toppings, we have bread with caraway seeds, walnuts, potatoe, different flour types and so on. Personally i recommand a bread with caraway seeds and some Handkäse to it.
Mett
Mett is a german breadspread made from raw pork. Yes you read right :) raw pork, seasoned with salt and pepper and served with either sliced or diced onions on a fresh bun. It`s delicious and safe to eat. Well as safe as every food item in a supermarked.
Toffifee
Toffifee is a staple in my house for the holidays, delicious toffee nougat and a hazelnut inside. You can easily eat yourselfes sick on those, so stick to one package at the time.
Hugo
Hugo is a summerdrink, it`s a prosecco flavoured with elderlyflower syrup. It`s sweet refreshing and if you want to be fancy just serve it on the rocks with some lime. But beware it`s quiet rich in calories and sugar. 100ml have 90calories, that`s more then double of what a coke has.
Bier
Of course you have to try german beer, but don`t fall for the most advertised ones. They are not bad but why stick to beer that you can easily buy in your homecountry aswell. Even in supermarkeds you can find small treasures of locally brewed beer from small breweries. don`t buy the beer you could get in your country in the german aisle anyways.
Ferrero Rocher
Rocher is a praline, with hazelnut, nougatspread and a shell of cookiecrust with sprinkled hazelnuts around. They taste great, and are another staple as a gift or to have at home around the holidays. And with at home i mean, they get bought and are usually gone by the end of the day. 3 girls in the house make chocolate dissapear in a matter of seconds.
Quark
Quark is a dairyproduct, the closest description of it would be a mixture of creamcheese and yoghurt. It`s a thick milkproduct that tastes sour on it`s own, but flavoured sweet or salty it makes an awesome sidedish. A famous dish is Pellkartoffeln with quark, potatoes and quark, boil the poatatoes with the skin on, preferably small oney and serve it with quark on the side. The quark is seasoned with salt and pepper and additional herbs. I eat quark as a layer under my jam on bread, instead of butter. The sourness of the quark compliments the sweetness of the jam. Quark is also the base for a german cheesecake. So if you ever try that in a cafe, you are eating just one of the many varieties of quark.
Dried salami
those long dried salami sausages are really good, and perfect as a picknick food. They can be storaged without a fridge. If you go to a german butcher you can also try the fresher versions of it and many butchers have their own recipe. So you won`t run out of varieties to try.
and some honourable mentions
-smoked tofu with sesame and almond
-saltsticks, Salzstangen
-true fruit smoothies, they taste great and have found a way to make the labels on bottles shitfunny
-the classy
-one of my favourit candies
I would have loved to add Nutella on the list, but sadly they changed the recipe for it and now it tastes like every other boring chocolate spread. It completely lost it`s traditional Nutella flavour. So just safe your money there and rather go for some german chocolate.
And i thougt, i m the only one who thinks about the same regarding the Nuttela flavour now. Nice post, should try the Tofu but didn't saw it anywhere. Where did you buy it @mrs.murphy
Beste Grüße aus Osnabrück
Artur
