Daily Field Notes #20

in #geopolis8 years ago

Welcome to the 20th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. Upvotes are currently worth more than $1,50 so don't hesitate to get involved or become a member for higher rewards! You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Ecology: Chile has officially created 5 new national parks and expanded three previous ones in a move that protects over 10 million acres of land!

The more national parks the better! @valth let us know that 8 parks have been created or expanded in Chili to protect the local ecosystems. It took a lot of time and money but the 10 million acres of protected land is a fact.

When we want to protect certain ecosystem, species or just protect nature in general, creating a legal protection is very important, so I am a huge fan of making national parks and other areas where there are strict restrictions as to what you are allowed to do within the area. Not only does this give a signal that the government care for the nature in this area, but it also increases their ability to control it, and potentially remove illegal activities from it if it is needed.

Geology: Amazonite ...you found me, just when I needed you most.

Have you ever heard of amazonite? Well, I didn't, but after reading this post I could almost feel @mle777's excitement! It really is a nice mineral so if you want to get excited about a stone too, make sure to give this post a try.

I wanted to share a specimen of Amazonite that I found a couple months back at a rock show in Colorado. Just one more little example that I seem to be blessed with finding what I need when I need it. I had been wanting to find a sample of Amazonite because I'm one of those woo woo people who believes in the healing powers crystals have to offer . Some recent life changes had left me with a few needs that I felt this mineral could assist with. I had been blessed with an all expense payed trip to help some friends settle into their new home in Colorado. Well Colorado just happens to be one of the handful of places on this planet where Amazonite has chosen to make itself known. Whi...

Archeology: Stone Age Grave of a Mother and Child is the Oldest Baby Burial in the Netherlands

Recently a new ancient grave has been found in the Netherlands of at least 6.000 years old. It is a rather rare find because the bones of children does not often get preserved that long, but thanks to @ioannis we now all know of this new discovery.

Original Post

Researchers working at an archaeological site in the Netherlands have made a startling Stone Age discovery. They have unearthed the earliest known example of a baby’s grave in the Netherlands. Specifically, archaeologists have found a 6,000-year-old grave of an infant in the arms of a woman, likely its mother. Dutch News reports the woman and child were uncovered at a site in Nieuwegein in the province of Utrecht; a location where hunter gatherers lived along the river during the Stone Age. It is one of the Swifterbant sites in the Netherlands. According to IB Times, the presence of the baby’s remains was not noted until researchers took a closer look at the bent arm of the female ske...
