Bobby the chess genius, what made him one of the all time greatest chess players in the world?

Lets look at his resume.

At 15, Fischer became the youngest chess grand master in the world but already at the age of 13 in 1956 he had won the US Junior championship and also played what is still called the game of the century against international master Donald Byrne.

He played 8 U.S. Championships starting from age 14 and won every one of them.

At age 20 he won the U.S. Championship with a perfect score, that had never happened and has still never happened too this day.

He kept destroying his opponents in the 1960s and became the ranking number one in 1971.

During this era, the cold war was at the peak of tension between Soviet and the U.S. This manifested very much in sports, instead of war. To show who was the greatest nation.

In 1972 this culminated in a world championship match the world had never seen before and will likely never see again in the world of chess. A match between Robert James Fischer and the reign soviet champion Boris Spassky in the neutral country of Iceland.

The whole world was watching.
Creating pressure in a game already full of physiological factors, it is difficult to describe how much pressure must have been on these two guys, simple chess players. That now had the faith of the nations on their shoulders.

History creates geniuses, and Bobby won the games in a spectacular way.
If this story is not incredible enough yet, after he won the championship he stopped playing. He never defended his world championship. For Bobby it was over, he had done what he set out to do. To show everyone he was the best.

Bobby always had a side of him that was in pain, a troubled man even when he was young. Handling his mind. After he was done with chess, this side of him took over and the other part of his life was a very isolated and a troubled one. After many years on the road he ended his life, in kind of a redemption in Iceland again. Where the icelanding people gave him a home.

But even if his life was a troublesome one, what we remember the most and what will live forever is his games.

The game of the century
