What's funny though is I've never met one of these IRL. I know they have furry conventions but other than that I've never really seen these people so I'm thinking this is just online. I've met several people who are obsessed with a certain animal, I guess if they are really young and came from trauma they could start believing that's what they are.
In the case of furries, I actually think it's just shyness. I think they feel safer to do the things they want to do without judgment behind the masks. Note that not all furries are animals, some are just cartoons, so they just probably don't want to be judged in human terms.
The otherkin I came across a few years ago while researching trans stuff. A case was being made because often people try to make fun of trans people equating them saying they feel they are something that doesn't show to them saying since they feel like cats they must be a cat. The article was saying that this was a very bad comparison given that the brain is in fact wired to recognize gender, the self and that of others, while there is nothing to go on the claim of feeling like another species scientifically.
I remember seeing a comment where one of this otherkin was complaining about being made invisible and it touched me, so I went to see what the hell was this animalkin stuff and ended up in a fb group. I kid you not, as open minded as I am, I did not last 20 minutes in there.
The way I see it this people, that includes some non-binary too, just feel as outsiders. Ironically this is not even an uncommon feeling so there is nothing special about them, nothing visibly unique, and maybe that's what bothers some of them. A lot of them come from trauma. A lot of them come from unstable environments and never felt like they belong somewhere. They find these little groups where they feel freer to speculate on their nature, since they think they are a minority they start trying to protect each other which can at times give that feeling of being cared for that most of them long for. They take the label as if it was the last name to their family to be able to spot each other, and then it becomes hard to leave the label behind when they grow out of these feelings because they think they risk forgetting their process or losing the friends they have made.
Part of me wishes to pay more attention to them because if you are separating yourself from your humanity like this then you must be in pain, but then part of me doesn't want to give them attention over this stuff to keep them from thinking this is a good way to go about getting attention. It's complex, very.
Knowing how delicate things that relate to self-identity can be I decided not to get involved at all, to me this is just part of growing up, and hopefully when they find out no one really cares what they do then they will realize nothing is keeping them from being who they are.
Having said that, and note that I am not accusing you of doing this but just throwing it out there, I don't think it's a good idea to make fun of them. I think the more we know about their condition the better, that's why it's important that they speak. If they stop speaking because people are giving them a hard time, being rude, making jokes, that doesn't mean they stopped believing. The problem would just go unseen and it may get worse, I'm sure nobody wants that.

I have been thinking about this and I think it is ok for me to make fun of someones actions that they choose to do. I do not find it ok to make fun of people for things they had no choice on.
I agree that no matter if I do or don't make fun of them they will still believe it, I would rather be honest then to lie and say "yeah really a dragon" or whatever. they should do what they want and not care about what others think and some one needs to teach them sticks and stones.
