Have you received an email like this in the last week?

Action required: To continue to send you important news and updates, we need your permission.

This week probably has seen an all time high in terms of email traffic, in the EU at least. Everyone are getting torrents of emails resulting from the sweeping changes to data privacy legislation in the European Union.

GDPR

The General Data Protection Regulation is coming into force next week and will have far reaching consequences for anyone that deals with personal data.
I have taken a close look in the last few weeks to prepare for the launch of my Let's Eat app which is due any day now.

It was a headache at first but WHAT A SILVER LINING!

Un-Subscribe Me

This week torrents of emails have been notifying me that they are removing me from the mass of email subscriptions that I have signed up to over the years. Of course included in this torrent I am sure there are spam emails looking for me to provide personal details, so my strategy is not to click on any links in emails. If I get one I do want to keep I will just go to the website and sign up again.

I sympathise with businesses where this regulation is a bit of a headache, decimating their email lists, but how fantastic is it that we are getting taken off all those mailing lists?

Blockchain

The big question for me is how will the regulators deal with Blockchains in terms of data:

  • Will they take a hard line?
  • Will they go after people who are running blockchain nodes? (I mean you cannot delete blockchain data)
  • Specific to Steem if you submitted a request to delete data from the Steem Blockchain is it possible?
Remember excluding IPFS Images are stored somewhere so they could be deleted. Have you thought about your responsibilities as an app provider?

Let me know what you think in the comments:

How does the GDPR affect you?

Do you Care about it?

What will the implications be for Blockchains?

Are you GDPR ready?

Thank you for reading this. I write on Steemit about Blockchain, Cryptocurrency and Travel.

A really interesting article - there seems to be a lot of focus around the processing of data taking place within the EEA. Not sure how this can be mapped to blockchain. There will be many many non-compliant businesses but the ICO will make examples of big corps and very bad practices first I would have thought.

This week's episode of click on the bbc was all about the gdpr. Worth a watch if you are interested.

I just watched it. A rep from the ICO was on and he said they are ready to go but he gave the impression that they would try to use the carrot rather than the stick and implied the fines would applied more for willful disregard and repeat offenders.

Like you say, it's fabulous news. Like a total email reset...
I did however, feel a little sorry for my local florist whom I use to send flowers to my Mum when I'm at home in Thailand. They sent me an email today asking if they could keep me on their mailing list. I said yes lol..

Sometimes I forget it's not just the huge companies that rely on Email lists to keep in touch with their punters.

Don't worry Michelle's florists, I still love you :-)

What will the implications be for Blockchains?

I am more interested what will be the implications for the General Data Protection Regulation if they take on blockchain, @eroche ;)

Hi Eroche. Fortunately I haven't signed up to a lot of things in the past. Never done Facebook, Instagram, Pin interest, Linkedin and all the others. Steemit was a big step for me lol. I am sure all the spammers and what not will find a way around it. They always do.

Wohoo your in the never done Facebook club. Me too!

I did sign up to Linkedin but I have since deleted my account. I still get emails for invitations. Once you get signed up on one of them it's so hard to get free.

I don't know why but I just didn't want my life on show. I felt the ones that needed to know something already knew. With all the things coming out I am glad I didn't. I am glad I am not the only one now. There are very few and haven't met anyone who doesn't have a facebook account.

Thanks for sharing such an important message

Oh yeah I get those a lot and I throw these in the spam folder. Why do you ask ?
Lol

I think this does not affect me as much as you, but it is very interesting this information, I will be pending anything thanks for the notice!

Nice to know that I wont be getting so many unwanted emails anymore but on the other side I will have to take my time to give my permission to keep getting those that I want to receive.
Btw. I also wonder how is it going to work with blockchains 🤔
