Approximately 1 out of every 1 comment about the root cause of this attack cites Israeli “occupation.”

Gaza has not been occupied by Israel for nearly 20 years.

During their 20 years of self-rule, conditions in Gaza have only gotten worse.

You may blame Israel for “blockading” Gaza, but Gaza shares a land border with Egypt and has Mediterranean ports with access to global trade. Israel even allows (and often funds) the transit of food and humanitarian supplies through their own checkpoints.

Contrary to the bizarre narrative which states the direct contrary, Israel provides electricity, fuel, food, and water to Gaza (until 4 hours ago, in response to this attack).

They don’t have to. It’s just humanitarian relief.

Israel is far from perfect, and has been struggling with rising fascism just like the rest of the world. Netanyahu’s domestic and foreign policy has been appalling. It should be criticized, it should be opposed, and it should be stopped, just like Trump and the MAGAs here in the US, along with Bolsonaro (and his movement), Meloni, Åkesson, Duterte (and his movement), Orban, Putin, Lukashenko, and so on.

But even Netanyahu and his fascist supporters had no power over conditions in Gaza for the past 20 years.

This conflict isn’t about land, or “apartheid,” or “settler colonialism.”

It’s about killing Jews, because the Palestinians have lived for generations under rulers just like the fascists now mobilizing their own populations towards the same form of hate (just with different targets).

It won’t be resolved to the security of Israel or the wellbeing of the people of Palestine until these people are stopping, and if Netanyahu’s regime endures, Israel has the same fate ahead of them as the people of Gaza have behind them.
