Beautiful Flowers In The Heat of a Texas Summer Day

My husband and I visited The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden in Dallas, Texas on August 5,2017. It was a very hot, humid day; but I was in search of butterflies and flowers that were in bloom. Of course, it helps that the entrance fee is only $1 per person and parking is only $5 for the whole month of August. I hope you enjoy the photos and information about one of the flowers!

These first 3 photos are of flowers called Celosia Flamingo Celosia Spicata. It is native to the tropics, but the plant is adapted to other climates, so Celosia is grown mostly as an annual all over the world. Celosia Flamingo seeds can be started indoors, and this plant is also known as Wheat Celosia or Flamingo Feather. Celosia Spicata is a tall, upright plant with reddish purple foliage and eye-catching, dark-pink, soft-pink terminal flower spikes that turn to white as they mature.
Celosia Flamingo is a wonderful plant to grow in mixed, sunny borders and patio planters. Celosia Spicata seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks, and the established Celosia Flamingo grows best in full sun or partial shade and needs moderate, but consistent watering with a good drainage provided. Celosia Spicata is one of the most popular cut flowers for dried, everlasting floral arrangements.

The rest of the photos are of the one lone butterfly I photographed and the rest of the flowers. We only lasted 45 minutes out in the heat of the 97 degree August day! Our air conditioned car sure felt good!

What beautiful flower, plants or trees have you seen lately that you were amazed by?

Sort:

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden in Dallas looked like a beautiful place to visit. This year seems especially hot. I guess global warming is having its effects everywhere. Thank-you for sharing your visit with us. The flowers were unique and amazing, especially the Celosia Flamingo Celosia Spicata. Have a cooler day tomorrow!

You"re not going to believe it, but we have temperatures in the high 90's and up to 103 some summers in late July and August. Sometimes it is in the 90's all the way thru September! Thankfully we have had lots of rain and cooler days this summer! We just had a great rain yesterday!

You must be suffering with all that heat! Is it getting hotter than normal or is this the norm for Texas? Hawaii has also been hot but when we have the trade winds, the heat is generally tolerable. But unfortunately the trade winds have been getting cut off so there are many times we are suffering too! I hope tomorrow will be cooler for you. Have a great day. I love your dog Pepper! :D

This is a typical summer @cabbagepatch. Thank goodness for air conditioning!

Your arboretum looks like a great place to visit. Beautiful photos!

Thank you @sunscape! It's even better to visit in the fall and spring!

I would imagine the plants might get quite stressed with those temperatures.

Lovely photos! Sounds like you had a great time, despite the 97 degree heat!
I bet you would have liked to rest under the shade of this particular tree-lol
The way its branches created a hidden 'world' amazed me

Thank you! Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I looked at your post, that looks like a good shade tree.

Beautiful flowers and nice photos of them. Too bad the heat kept you from enjoying more.

I only live 30 min from The Arboretum, so I will go back when it's cool in the fall, winter and spring! My daughter lives close to it, so that makes it nice! Thanks for stopping by!
