RE: Chickens Planting Gardens - How To Get Chickens To Plant Gardens, Not Destroy Them

in #gardening8 years ago

Chickens were my best friends growing up, now they are my backyard gardens best friends and a lovely source of eggs and entertainment for my grandchildren. Soon I will be moving their run to my homes little side yard which has been growing all our pumpkins and squash. They'll get to hunt bugs and eat weeds to their hearts content through the fall.

Sort:

They love pumpkins and squash. We always leave a few in the yard. Over the winter, the squashes break open and the chickens have something to eat.
How many you got and what breeds?

Luzcypher, in Oregon I raised around 200 a year, sold most of the pullets and butchered the Roos. Here in Tulsa OK, my backyard flock consists of 6 hens, two barred rock, two black sexlinks, two Americana. I turned most of our yard space into a garden and small chicken run. In the fall and winter the hens get the run of the place. I'm so happy your post is doing so well! Power to us chicken fanciers <3

@reddust Oregon is so beautiful. Im in Snohomish, Washington. Olahoma must be different for you.
Im amazed this post did so well. I had no idea people liked chicken as much as i do. Go figure. Thanks to all the Steemians that commented and upvoted.
Do you feel the recent earthquakes in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma has mean blood sucking bugs, nice people, red dirt, and wide open blue skies. Politically speaking it's good old boy corruption that is opposing globalized centeral government and a big federal government. I'm a libertarian socialist per Noam Chomiskism sorta....hehehe so I get along with basically everyone who lets me do what I want to do...I think the chickens are part of a symbiotic relationship we have with our ancient domestic ecosystems most people have lost and intuitively want that connection back.

I grew up in Estacada Oregon and moved to Eugene from Chicago with my husband five years ago, to see if we could grow all of our food on two acres. The only thing I could grow was grains. We bought that in bulk and I milled our own flour, bought raw milk from a three cow farm down the road. I learned how to make cheese and yogurt!

We are in Oklahoma to spend time with my oldest daughter and her kids. We're all living together during her divorce, we are helping keep a solid home base during turbulence, that's been interesting....haha

I love the Northwesr<3

The earthquake was crazy weird, I was on the toilet when it happened...laughing like crazy cause I was thinking, "omg I just had a big movement, so big it moved the earth."

I'm in tears over hete from laughing
