Sounds like a really great project! Small plots can produce a lot more food than you would expect. With some basic hand tools you should be able to manage, that can keep the initial investment costs low. Also look into local gardening clubs or go to a local farmers market and talk to some people there. Tons of knowledge can be had for free from other local farmers. Go help out in the garden for a couple days a week, you will be amazed how fast you learn. We posted an article about finding farm internships recently, check it out.
