RE: EPIC SUMMER GARDEN TOUR!

in #gardening6 years ago

Lovely to see! I live and garden in the forest, trying to emulate nature as much as I can. I had a good source of wood chips but I found that when I used it as a mulch in my more open garden, I found it helped some plants but some it seemed to take away from. Is that straight wood chips that you are using or does it have some chicken manure in it or something? I heard that the wood chips when they are decomposing can use a lot of nitrogen.

Thank you @porters!
That is great to hear.
Yes it is straight wood chips, but the chips also had some leaves and twigs and sticks in them.
And no, wood chips dont tie up nitrogen in your soil as long as you apply them correctly. You only want to use the wood chips as a mulch and layer them, you never want to mix them in the soil.
The main thing that will be breaking down your wood chips is fungus, they are they teeth of the forest.
If you don’t trust those words then look at my garden or a natural forest and you will notice they aren’t lacking nitrogen.
I hope this helps, thanks for watching my friend 😁👍

That makes sense. Your forest garden looks very healthy!
