Gardening Day!

in #gardening8 years ago

Gardening days are tiring but fun, and always give me a better mood. Come check out what I did in the apartment homestead in the sky today!

Maple tree's leaves officially look maple-y. Teeeeeeeeny tiny mapley leaves. 🍁

First I repotted my Dragon Trees. This is Dudley, and he'd been in that pot for years. I had to buy it the last time I repotted him because I didn't own a pot that large. What to do?

A bushel bucket! I added about two 5-gallon buckets worth of soil in addition to what he already had.

Into his new home!

And cat proofed. I learned this trick from someone I volunteered with. At the time, I had a kitty named Deidre who would turn any big plant she could climb in into her most favorite litterbox. She killed a few plants with her pee. So I had been afraid to take Dudley down from the ceiling even though he was growing sideways because despite a chain of s-hooks, he was too tall to be that high.

Solution: put knicknacks and Happy Meal toys and any odd thing they won't like to walk on, halfway buried in the dirt. No litterbox-ing! Now, Maggie and Yuan have never peed in a plant, but those are Dudley's toys at this point. Also, if I ever run out of cat grass for Yuan, guess who he tries to eat (and Dragon Trees are not healthy for kitties to nom)? Yeah. So I keep the cat grass growing (planted some more seeds today), and though the Dragon Trees aren't out of his reach, I'm at least not going to make it a bed and breakfast in there. 😉

See this beautiful Rapunzel-like train coming off my Wandering Jew plant?

See all these vines it grew (not the Pothos) and then disconnected from its roots so I have to keep hunting for them and rooting them in water (on my super messy counter) so I can repot them or else they die? Yeah. That's how those plants roll.

He's divinity and he knows it!

I still don't know what kind of flower this is, but they are the only flower survivor! 💛

Apple trees got transplanted into bigger pots today!

I emptied a lot of pots that held dirt but no living plants.

Ash tree will get a bigger pot too, but on another day. ;)

I love my growing grove of plants in my high rise homestead. 💚 This is what makes me happy. Thanks for reading!

Happy Caturday! 💙

Sort:

Great trees and plants! So good of you to share your sky high homestead with us!! You did s lot of gardening today, phew! That furry God looks trés content!! It's been a fine Caturday indeed! Your happiness shines through in your post! I love that about it. 🐴

He spent some time enjoying the balcony with me, but not when I was out there in 95°F potting plants. He has more hot weather sense than his human.

I love your homestead in the sky! Every place needs plants! Lots and lots of plants! I like the idea of the toys around the dragon tree. I wonder if that works for dogs and bigger trees?

I don't know, but worth a shot! I know they have these things called a "potty rock" which is basically a brick sprayed with pheromones they will want to cover up with their own pee smell, so you can attract them to the appropriate place you want them to pee at.

This is a good idea. I will have to look into this...

I believe your mystery flower is a marigold! I love your jungle apartment in the sky!

That would be AWESOME because I usually grow marigolds, but all the seeds I tried that I already had this year were old. This one came from a mix of flower seeds packet. I usually have smaller marigolds so maybe it's just a bigger variety! Way cool! 😃

That trick of covering the earth in the plant pot with small objects is a great idea. Your little plant-lets are coming along so nicely, so rewarding when they get their first identifying leaves. I guess you have to do a lot of watering with those temperatures. Do you get much wind? That seems to be a major problem here with high level balcony gardens. Great day!

Some days, I do get a lot of wind. Once the tree that is there whipped inside the balcony, snagged my tomato cage, and sent the tomato plant to the ground. I went out to water and was like ...wait ...I'm missing tomatoes.
The plant had just started to bloom and snapped cleanly in half: blooms on one end, roots on the other. 😢

Happy to see your gardening activity here @phoenixwren😊
I also can spend many times when I do gardening activity, to take and put the flowers on the good looking place, sometimes I change it to find the good place to see. I feel how happy when we doing this activity with my self🤗

Wow, amazing things you are doing up there Phe! It just goes to show that anyone can grow, anywhere!! You're a real inspiration, and yes, that looked like a very full day's work!! I love your baby tomato, soooo cute, and congrats on your successful maple too.

Thank you thank you. 😊
