Flower buds after 10 years

in #gardening7 years ago

This little lemon tree has an odd story. A friend had a neighbour whose lemons we used to steal. Well, the tree was growing right next to the wall and the lemons were never used....

The lemons were odd in that the seeds were viviparous, meaning that they germinated inside the fruit. I took a few of these seedlings home and put them into pots but was living in rented accommodation for years so they were never planted in the gound and ended up as stunted semi-bonsais and over the years, one died, one was stolen and one remained with me. I finally got my own home 3 years ago and the lemon tree got a much larger pot and started to thrive although it is 10 years on so it's still a stunted little bush really.

So I am very curious to see what this little bush produces. It is a bad idea to try and grow fruit trees from seed because most fruit trees that you buy in a nursery are actually grafted clones of a single tree and there's no telling what seed-grown trees will produce.

Lemon trees are self-pollinating so you can get fruit from a single tree but it will remain a surprise how these lemons turn out because it's not a nursery plant.

I am pleased that it is finally flowering anyway and I now have a good spot for it and it will soon be planted in the ground. It's a tough little survivor that deserves a chance to grow freely

My grandmother also loved to grow lemons. But it’s cold in winter, so they are all grown at home. Then they are vaccinated and they bear fruit. In childhood, we all waited for the lemon to ripen and we would be given lemon slices. We really enjoyed drinking tea with lemon.

Lemon tea is good

Now you need to plant a tea tree :-))

Tea doesn't grow where I live, the climate is wrong

Then you need to plant ivan-tea. This one can survive ... maybe :)

I learned something today: I didn't know about Ivan-tea, it seems interesting

In Russia, many Ivan-tea were harvested before and even exported to England. Now this business is starting to revive. I make this tea for myself. Very tasty and healthy

I once grew some orange trees from seed... Beautiful leaves they produced..

Yup! that's it
