Planting time!

Sunflowers, zucchinis, tomatoes, oh my!

We threw down some seeds on Memorial Day. It was HOT, nearly 100ºF by 11am, but we forged ahead nonetheless. Husband dug up the sod with a shovel and I broke the dirt loose to return to the plots. I had a blast picking earthworms out of the soil to move to our compost pile. Husband was really pleased with the quality of our soil; no rocks, loamy and brown, fluffy and packable.

We began with a roughly 2ft by 8ft row at the front of our property, where we planted sunflower seeds. We put in two rows, and we'll plant snap peas to vine up the stalks this week. We figured it'd be good to give the sunflowers a smidgen of a head start.

We dug a space for peppers on the right side of our porch, even though we're not sure we'll have a long enough season for them and we doubt they'll do well having not been started inside. On the left we transplanted four tomato plants Husband nursed in the apartment.

Finally, we dug spots for zucchinis and cucumbers along the front of the house to the left of the porch. We didn't turn up mounds to plant them; I don't know how that will effect the plants?

Next year we will acquire a tiller so that Mikhail doesn't have to work so hard. It was exhausting! We were both covered in mud by the end and he won a harsh, peely-itchy sunburn for his efforts.

This week we also want to throw some strawberry starts around the yard. We're excited to watch our plants grow and learn more about gardening!
