Imminent Frost: Get Ready For Fried Green Tomatoes!

Fall is certainty here!
As we prepare for a frost, we say good bye to the tomatoes.
Today we harvested what fruits were left and sent the plants to the compost.
It's always a nostalgic time of year as the growing season wanes and winter peeks it's head into view. The resting time is important and the cleansing that comes from death is a welcome change from the abundant and vigorous growth we see during the heat of the summer.
As temps cool off, the cool season crops come into their prime.
We love the shoulder seasons for this reason. Plants like arugula, kale, chickweed, clover and winter peas are all doing splendidly during the cooler daytime temps.

These represent a welcome addition to the diet as we are invited to eat more cool loving greens.
The end of the summer growth allows for closing things up. In this case it means kissing the tomatoes goodbye and eating some fried green tomatoes.
We will process and can what's left and welcome a little break from the garden. Although to be honest this just means focusing more on planting trees.
Join us as we say goodbye to summer and welcome in Autumn.

I plan to dig a rosemary to bring inside, as serious frost is due on Thurs. I also have planned to clean out the area where I need to plant garlic today. Tomorrow my intern comes and we will start planting. This, of course, meant I had to plan next year's garden in the Big garden...
