Backyard Homesteading Adventures (Late April Update)

in #gardening7 years ago

Sunny weather and random rain showers have worked their magic; beans, okra, and cucumbers have all sprouted. But the beans look magnificent with their a set of full leaves.

Got the area dug for the Three Sisters project. Decided to run with the butternut for the squash aspect. So once the corn (there's about six plants per hill) sprouts and is just the right height, the beans (Contender pole beans) and squash will get planted. So excited to see how this will turn out! Once the harvest is done, we're going to smooth out the hills and plant brussel sprouts come autumn.

This old pallet is an upcoming project. Going to get some landscaping fabric (it's like felt) and make pockets for soil, and attach them to the pallet's insides, and then either plant with lettuce or strawberries.

Over by an old climbing rose bush, I dug up and planted an herb garden for my mom. The rosemary plant she had in a pot bought around Christmas time, and the rest of the soil has been sown with sage, basil, dill, cilantro, thyme, and lavender. Think I might overseed with some perennial wildflowers (echinacea, foxglove, flax) for a wild cottage garden feel.

And finally, over at the berries, we have ladybug babies hunting and gobbling aphids like it's a free all-they-can-eat buffet.
