Fruits & Veggies MONDAY Competition +++ GARDEN ZOMBIES
Morning!!!
Ok, yes, I know its not Monday and I've missed the deadline for @lenasveganliving but it inspired me for this post. Just a little recap if you're a new friend: @nutinbutdatruth and I moved to SoCal last year from Brooklyn, NY. We wanted a change from city living, and we got exactly what we were looking for and then some. One of the biggest drawbacks to city living was the lack of natural sunlight in our apartment, and a shaded fire escape that did not provide a quality growing climate. I killed more plants than you could imagine. So naturally, our first project here was to start a garden, and I'm happy to report its been very successful!

Arugula:
Lettuce:
Onion:
Beets:
Did you notice the garden zombies I stuck in there? Since growing is so easy out here in sunny California, I've had a little time to decorate the garden. I've also made a few Buddahs, and some very Cali-esque fairy garden decorations. I put a little chicken wire in a few of them so they can stick in the arrangement, gently resting on top of some succulents or resting on the side.
Happy Potting!

Nice! Looks like you got a good garden started there. I love gardening. I see you got some nice "weeds" growing outside the garden beds... many of those are quite delicious as well! I really dig the garden decorations too. It's so cool that you make them yourself. I really gotta do some posts on my gardens, I got 4 acres of awesomeness here. And I got some gnarly #cementdecor I bet you'd dig too -
i love your cement statues!!! ive got to work my way up to building my own molds to make epic ones like those someday :) I cant believe you have 4 acres, that is amazing! since we are renting, theres only so much $ im willing to put into the landscape, lol. And yes!! coming from the east coast, we are used to seeing a lot more green and lush areas so decided to keep the weeds for their color. Had two visitors this week and both of them suggested eating it, too! Do you eat it raw or cook with it?
I do both. Fresh in salads or on sandwiches or burritos. Cooked in soups or rice or beans. Many of the weeds are quite good. Just be sure they haven't been sprayed with any chemicals. I first learned about eating "weeds" from some old Bradford Angiers "Free for the eating" books that I got from my grandparents, but then I found Christopher Nyerges and he has some really great high quality yet easy to use guides on wild foods. I remember back when I used to hate seeing the weeds come up in spring because it just meant work... now I see many of them as part of my wild garden. I'm continually working on getting rid of crappy weeds so the good ones can take over!
yesss, thank you for the book recommendation! @creationofcare and I were discussing another hike for foraging. Learning what's good to eat around SoCal, just in case of that giant earthquake that will cut off our water supply indefinitely. :D

You are killing me with your garden pics... It's been more than 3 years since I had a garden. I used to have a huge one in Casa De Oro, but now living in a condo. We have a patio, but it is in shade almost the entire year...
that was my issue in NYC. fire escape was our only outdoor space and it was blocked on both sides so got sun for maybe an hour a day. are you allowed up on the roof of your condo? my friend had amazing success with a container garden, but sun is key.
No roof access, the association would FREAK! But I am moving in the next 2 months anyway, and looking for some yard space...
its all about the yard space! the house part doesnt matter as much with california weather.
Congratulations, It looks like you have a very lovely garden my Dear. I would love to see its progress, so keep on sharing with us on Monday 🍒 🍌🍑🌿🍍🍓🍇
thanks for checking out my not-quite-contest-but-close post :D Ill be sure to post some updates! The beets are my favorite, Ive got to get some snaps of their vibrant colors and stripes!
Yes, @madpotters I see the zombies. They give my eyes perspective and contrast the size of the vegetables. That is the first time zombies have ever looked cute.
post a video of you playing in the steel drum band!!! I used to live in Brooklyn, and the one best night of the year was J'ouvert, the night before the West Indian Day Parade. Parties started around midnight, and the parade kicked off around 3-4am and went through sunrise. I spent hours walking up and down the parade route with all the steel bands, just dancing in the streets with everyone and trying to avoid the oil drum guys. Everyone throws paint and baby powder, its so fun!
Lol, https://steemit.com/music/@steemseph/bass-in-this-place-and-that-place-too-double-header-part-3-of-3-featuring-a-second-set-by-taco-drunk-performers-for-taco-surf-s
LOVE LOVE LOVE. Do you guys ever play in San Diego???
Really glad you like us! We love when dancers help us have fun. I'm sure you made those Steel band very happy just by dancing with them. Were you a flag girl? That's not rude to ask is it?
Sorry for the short response earlier, been hustling to get things together for today's performance. We are performing today for students in Huntington Beach at Marina high school.
We'll go most anywhere. We've been to San Diego a couple times mostly for conventions and private parties. Probably again this year.
Now that I know more SoCal neighbors are here, I'll give a heads up. We are performing publicly tomorrow but it's all the way up here in orange county, Surfside near Huntington Beach and Seal Beach at TacoSurf again. 😁
not a flag girl, just someone who enjoys the music and culture :D no worries! i just had a two day event with my cement pots and I didnt manage any comments, let alone short ones lol. Please let me know when you come to SD, we'd love to come out and support!
wow @madpotters, a two day event, i'll take a look at your page. Ok, next in SD, i'll share it on the SoCal discord and maybe this comment when I figure out the dates (if we have some). SD is beautiful. Yes, charismatic culture :)
We had a fun performance on Friday. I'll share a link to my periscope broadcast of it, if you want. I hope to create a post of the highlights, but I'm afraid of all the other content I intended to post before it. :)
yes, please share!! can you break it up into two posts - one safe for work and the other with a warning? what is it of, anyways? i bet its fine! and get some dates in SD. i expect to see you guys here...not IF, LOL.
haha thank you! i dont usually use silicone molds, but when one catches my eye (like this popsicle mold) I just cant stop myself from pouring cement in it :)
great idea
Love the SoCal fairy garden decor!
thank you! its from an ice cube tray mold, if you can believe it! lol
Cool! I don't think I'd have thought of that.
anything plastic, tupperware, silicone....I see everything as a potential mold nowadays! LOL
It’s amazing how hobbies and crafts can change the way you look at everyday things.
