Growing Veg On Your Windowsill
These onions are growing out of a 5 litre plastic bottle. Remove the neck of the bottle. Cut holes around the bottle using scissors or a heated soldering iron. The holes must be just the right size for the onions. Fill the bottle with layers of soil, inserting the sprouting onions as you go. Water from the top and watch them grow.

Garlic sprouts
If you ever find garlic bulbs sprouting in your veg rack don't throw them away. Cut off the sprouting bit with the top of the bulb attached. Place the budding clove in a small glass bowl. Add sufficient water to just touch the bottom of the clove.....don't submerge it. Change the water every couple of days or when it becomes cloudy. Harvest the sprouts when they are about 3 inches tall. Use them in salads, dips or on top of baked potatoes. The sprouts have a very mild garlic flavour.

Carrots
You will not grow new carrots from their tops....it is more of a learning exercise for children. Choose a fresh carrot with a little green on top. Cut the carrot 2 inches below the crown. Place in a shallow saucer and add water so that half of the top is submerged. Put the saucer on a windowsill and add water as required.
