PROPAGATING RASPBERRIES WITH RED-PEPPER

in #gardening7 years ago

Today Red-Pepper got to help @papa-pepper with some gardening chores!

I know that some of you might think that the exclamation point at the end of that last sentence is just there to try to create hype, but honestly to play a role in the production of your own food can be a very exciting and rewarding adventure. Since @papa-pepper has big plans on food production and eventually making an entire edible landscape and food forest, he’ll be propagating a lot of plants, and now he had the opportunity to teach the @little-pepper the same skills that he had to learn in his thirties.

If you saw our post yesterday about @truconspiracy coming down to visit and bringing us some gifts from @noganoo, then you already know that among those gifts were a bunch of Raspberry cuttings. Having the cuttings is great, but unless we put forth the effort now to get them to root and grow, they will just dry up and die and the whole attempt will become a waste of time, effort, and potential.

HERE IS THE BASIC PROCESS THAT WE USED.

First, we had our cuttings soaking in a bucket of water to make sure that they were hydrated.

Then we filled bin with compost and soil, and drilled holes in the bottom of it for drainage.

Next, we put the bucket of hydrated Raspberry cuttings next to the bin of soil and compost… but nothing happened.

To encourage something to happen, we began to pick up the Raspberry cuttings.

After picking them up, we began to shove them into the soil in the bin.

We did that over and over again.

And then we did that some more.

Finally, we filled the bin and a five gallon bucket with the cuttings and watered them.

We think that we did such a good job, Red-Pepper gave it two thumbs up!

THAT’S IT?

Obviously, that seems like a pretty easy process, and, to be honest, it was. As long as the cuttings are kept moist and not allowed to dry out, they should root just fine and we will have a whole bunch of Raspberry plants just that easy.

Here is a video from @papa-pepper explaining a little more about this process:

I had NO IDEA you could root raspberry cuttings like that!

If you need food plants when you get your land, we can supply you with a lot!

Red-pepper, were there any little prickers on the raspberry cuttings? I hope they sprout very soon and that you can find a great place to plant them. We love you.

There were! Papa had to remind her about the curse!

can't wait to see the fruits of your labor :-)

Us neither!

Nice work, Red-Pepper! It will be exciting to see the roots on your cuttings. Once you have these started well, you will be enjoying a lot of raspberries!

A LOT is our goal!
