From ice fishing to gardening?!

in #gardening6 years ago (edited)

I got out and started fixing up this garden, I am quite sick of looking at it and this year it is getting done!!
No ifs ands or fuckin buts about it, its getting done! Plus I have some spaghetti squash, peppers, jicamas, and asparagus already started in the house.

I was able to unscrew some boards and others I had to pry off, the wood was a bit rotten. I am only taking the middles for now and making the two into one. Eventually, I want to make the garden border nice big limestone rocks and pull out all those rotten boards.

The middle boards on the left bed were hard to get out it was still pretty frozen. So I worked on the right bed, I leveled the dirt, pulled out chunks of tree roots, picked out rocks and took some manure from the two piles in the left bed and spread it on the right bed.

A pic from the bedroom window. I got both beds leveled as much as I could since some dirt/manure was still frozen, all but one board in the middle out, rocks picked, old weeds picked, and tree roots picked. Next step will be getting 2 more loads of dirt, hopefully, next time I get to town. I can only find free rocks/gravel out here, no dirt...anywhere.
I got as much as I could do with the garden for now.

I also pulled out the car hauler and got the front leaf springs measured up to order new ones.

When hauling in timbers to the cabin last spring it had broken both springs going onto the lake and it has been sitting since then, time to get it fixed it is definitely needed.

While I was working Snoopy kept sneaking off to go play in the puddles.

Nice rich looking soil, I hope you have a great yield this year. lol Them leaf springs don't last forever.

I hope I can get a good yield outta there this year too!!
They don't last forever, especially if you have seen the places we have taken that trailer! LOL

Feel the same about my garden. I hope to see some follow up pictures of how it goes. Hope you get a good crop for your efforts.

I will definitely be posting update pictures/posts as the summer goes along. :)

What a great post!! That was a great undertaking! looks great! I can see the squash growing already!!! what are Jicamas?

I love Snoopy!!! LOL that picture made me burst out laughing! that face!! LOL

Jicama’s are a root vegetable. I’ve never eaten or grown Jicama's before, lol.
I eat Keto and what I read they can be used for fries.. mmm fries! So it’s really all just an experiment. 😉
Snoopy loves playing in the puddles, he always sticks his face right in there and digs for rocks or sticks!

where in the north are you? we have so many lakes here too! Northern Ontario here! :)
I will look into jicamas. I am zone 2. :) I like fries!! LOL
Off to google i go!
I just found Jerusalem artichokes! will get those planted as soon as the snow disappears!
That picture should be a screen saver!!! LOLOL

Next door, in Northern Manitoba.
If I remember right it was zone 11? for those Jicama’s LOL! ... its worth a try anyway ;)

LOL little bit of a culture shock...far away from mexico!! LOL just googling them! where did you get the seed? I think it is fantastic that you are trying! I did sweet potatoes last year...got 3!! LOL looking forward to the updates!!

I got the seeds from Richters, online, they are located in Goodwill, Ont.
I hope I get to try a few! ;)

Keep up with the great work :) and thanks for sharing!

Thanks!
The plan with this garden is removing the middles and making it into one big 26x16 garden with big limestone rocks as the border instead of the ugly rotten boards.

Yeah working in the garden can be time and muscle consuming.

I like to look at it as a 'free gym' :)

Perhaps if you into 'renovations mood' right now, you can consider building a nice hydroponic NFT system near your raised beds and try if it works out for you...(cheap upvc pipes will work just fine) - > that way you can save quite a bit on the actual working :)

keep sharing the progress, really curious to see :)
