Saving TRUE Seeds
I wanted to share with you a method we use to ensure the seeds we are saving are true to what they should be. When you grow multiple varieties of a specific fruit or vegetable, you risk cross-pollination happening. Cross-Pollination is when a pollinating insect brings pollen from one plant to a plant from a different variety within the same species. The genetic components from the pollen of each plant will combine resulting in a fruit or vegetable with characteristics of both varieties combined, essentially making an entirely new variety. This is basically a form of hybridizing seeds. The fruit or vegetable from that particular cross will not be affected and is still be edible however, the seeds within that fruit or vegetable will be affected. If you were to plant those seeds next year you might not end up with the same fruit or vegetable, but instead, you would end up with a hybrid.
That being said, it is important to know that cross-pollination can only occur between varieties of the same species. For example, some cabbages are in the Brassica oleracea yet others, like Chinese Cabbage, are in the Brassica rapa. The two cannot cross. Yet broccoli and cauliflower are BOTH in the Brassica oleracea species therefore they can in fact cross with each other.
The video below will show you the method we use to ensure true seeds. If you want to ensure you preserve those beautiful heirloom seeds and have exactly what you are hoping to have, then you can use this method to ensure true seeds. Additionally, Seed Savers Exchange has created a nifty chart to help you learn the different species which will help you on your journey to seed saving! Check out the video below as well as this chart in the link below.
