Germinating/Growing Pinto & Great Northern Beans and The Benefits of Planting as a Companion Crop!

in #gardening7 years ago

I recently germinated some beans that I had sitting around the house. My reason for this is actually very specific. Legumes (bean family) actually re-enrich soil with nitrogen compounds through bacterial nodules contained on their root systems. I am an all organic grower so an organic source of nitrogen like this is wonderful and great practice. Native Americans planted beans with their corn as a companion crop not only as a source of nitrogen but also the corn acts as a trellice for the beans to climb. What a wonderful relationship eh?

I've taken this a step further and am planting some of these beans in with my cannabis as a test to see whether they grow well together or not. If you are interested in how this is going to turn out don't forget to follow my page @kauslevi as I will be posting updates as well as a time-lapse video (30x speed) of the beans growing that I just started.

Germination!
Germination is very easy with beans. Simply place them in a moist paper towel for a few days in a hydro chamber (or even a slightly vented zip lock bag will work) and BAM. Roots. Specifically it took these beans about 2 days.

Here is them when I started the germination proccess.

And here is them with roots, ready to go.

I planted them last night. Some of them I put in with my cannabis and some I planted in a container that is going out onto my porch. I also decided to throw in some green bell pepper seeds to see if they would grow as well. Why not? haha.
