Does A Bamboo Flower?
Bamboo Flowers
Have you heard about bamboo flowers? If you haven't seen any don't be frustrated. Actually, you will be very lucky to see some. They don't flower like a normal plant. It takes close to 50 years for a bamboo plant to blossom. But when they do that is also a spectacular site. Scientists called them mass flowering. Though the mechanism of this is yet to be understood fully, some researchers are of the opinion that bamboo plants have some form of "memory" traits in their rhizomes. this causes their synchronous flowering.
Having said that, not every variety of bamboos display mass flowering. Some people also believe that mass flowering of bamboo also brings bad fortune with it. According to some, this type of flowering also bring famine, pleagues etc.
I never knew bamboo could or would flower! That is kind of cool.
50 years is a long time; but I imagine worth the wait.
