Making Tomato Fertilizer On The Homestead

The Fertilizer Journey

The tomato starts are growing and it is time to plant them in the pots where they will be living and producing juicy and ripe tomatoes.  They have grown tall and strong and it is time for them to move on to their new home.

One Of Four Small Starter Pots

While others are finding the perfect pots and some quality Organic Soil and Compost, I am going to get the fertilizer started. One of our goals is to be ready. We do not like to scramble around for what we need come planting day.

Tomato Fertilizer Recipe

Just finished that banana for breakfast? Don't throw the peal away! Just add it to a container with a tight lid and let it wait. We also had nice strong coffee this morning. Don't waste the grounds, add it to the container. Last of all are the egg shells left from making scrambled eggs. Don't ever waste egg shells, as they go in many recipes. Add these egg shells to the container. Add a small amount of water (about 1/4 Cup) and let it sit for a couple oof days. After allowing them to break down for a couple of days, put in the blender and blend until it is a liquid. Poor into an old empty juice bottle and label. I like to keep this fertilizder process going, as we will need a lot of Tomato fertilizer.

I use fertilizer when I first transplant and then again when ever I water. I am constantly making different fertilizers on the homestead. This fertilizer is perfect for those plants that require acidic soil, such as tomatoes, camelias, roses, azaleas, and rhododendrons.

Excellent, I learn something new everyday. Followed...don't want to miss the future fertilizer recipes.

There sure are a lot of ways to grow plants and food! It's nice to not have to buy fertilizer and other material to grow plants. Would you put citrus peels in this mix? Is there any kitchen waste from plants to not put into the blender and use like this -- or is this a specific recipe for tomatoes, that should not be modified? Thanks!

I will be posting several recipes, but this one is for acid loving plants. Tomatoes and the others I posted. You can put any organic or those grown with organic prinsibles in the compost pile. Then you will have free compost. For compost, you can use all veggie and fruit scraps, coffee and tea grounds, egg shells if organic or a home flock not given antibiotics or non organic commerical feed. No fats or meats of any kind.

Good idea. Do you use this to fertilize transplants you are growing from seed? If so, have you had any problems with introducing mold? If not, I will try it on a couple and report back in a couple months.

I use it on all my tomato transplants. I am very careful and I make small amounts of the fertilizer and keep in the fridge. It is a fresh batch every few days. The peel, eggs, and coffee are fresh also. When I was in the tropics, it was finished usually in one day. I have never had mold yet.
