Effective Garden Planning On Any Homestead

The Garden Is Started

Effective garden planning on any homestead includes all areas of life. Today we are setting out seeds into small pots to jump start our short growing season, This is the first window and there are many more to utilize, From mid January to mid March every nook and cranny will be utilized for tomatos, peppers, etc.  Here in the North, the growing season can be short if you do not jump start your seeds indoors. For the most part, the only seeds that go directly outside are those like greens. Greens, grow like weeds.

I also utilize large pots for my garden. This does a few  things for me. One, it allows me to garden where I might not have been able to do so otherwise. I am a firm believer that almost anyone can garden with creativity. For this project I use a collection of windows. Next, it allows me to garden with very few bug infestations. Bugs don't crawl up the large pots for the most part. Finally, it allows me to put the seedlings in the ground sooner. The dirt in the pots is much warmer than that of the ground. If the nights are too cold, it is easy to cover the young plants with plastic.

Then there is the dirt itself. When starting new pots, I buy bagged Organic Gardening Soil. If my soil is organic and I use organic principles, then my garden will be a non-certified organic garden.  This is always my number one garden goal. Last years pots are recycled and so is their soil. To keep the dirt healthy, I emply the older pots on to a tarp and mix it all together. Then I had a couple of bags of fresh compost. Thus my soil is kept in excellent condition.

Gardening need not be complicated. I hope that wherever you live, you will join us for a time of gardening. So put those gloves on and lets get dirty.

 Enjoy your garden!

Thanks for your thoughts. Nice trick starting your food plants indoors! I never would have thought of that.
