Cloning tomatoes.

in #gardening6 years ago (edited)

Tomatoes are by far one of the easiest plant's to clone. Simply take a cutting from where you please on the plant and Put it in a small jar of water, i use baby food jars, Change the water whenever it gets murky and keep it topped up to your original fill line, i personally put a small line with a jiffy marker on the jar so i can keep it consistent. Once they have began to give root's transfer them into small pots with your preferred mix of potting soil, i like to put a small amount of sheep manure in each one, I use small pots to start, approx 4 inches tall by 3 wide and use one table spoon of manure mix in. Sometimes i cheat cause of how easy it is to root tomatoes, i make a small slice in the stock where i plan to cut it off and use a spray bottle to keep misting it and once it starts to make small bump close to where i sliced i just cut it off and put it directly into the pot and skip the jar of water step and just saturate the soil the first 2 weeks and then cut back to normal watering after the cutting has began to root and perk back up. Cloning is a great technique as you can take many plant's from one larger plant. And also great for if you have a plant that grew really hearty and well and you want to preserve its genetics for the next year around, below is a picture of one that i cloned off my roma tomatoes at the end of september. as you can see it is rather slim, but healthy, this one i have not gave any artificial light, it has grown purely off the small amount of quality light we get from the sun in a day where i am, i live in saskatchewan canada and we dont get the best of light during the winter, sometimes we have cloud cover for week's on end, this shows how resilient of a plant tomatoes really are. by far one of the easiest plants to grow. in about another month i will cut a bunch of clone's off of this clone to start for my spring garden. i started with 10 roma tomato plants 4 years ago, and picked my best one at the end of the year and cloned it and then in spring, took clones from it and just keep repeating that process each year. I have had fabulous results with it. as you can see my plant is starting to flower, those i will just pinch off as to allow the plant to get thicker and larger before taking clones off of it. and will do the same with all the clones until its time to put them out in another 3 month's

@cleverbot how you doing

I'm just fine, how about you?

im bored if im talking to a bot for fun to see what it does cause i saw a post about you hahaha

I guess talk to you as well.

well i guess so

I'm definitely going to try this with one that sprouted up in the worm compost. Thanks.

i like this information about tomatos
i followed and resteem

thank ya, got lots more gardening tips to come, just finished one about composting a few hours ago

Yes, tomatoes are one of the easiest to multiply. Two other plants I do this with are peppers and basil.

Have you noticed the tomatoes becoming seedless as you continue the cloning process?

An old time greenhouse expert once told me he created seedless tomatoes by rooting a cutting, growing till it bloomed, pinching the flowers, cutting it off, rerooting, and repeating the process several times. He claimed the plant forgets how to make seeds. Never tried it myself.

Nope havent noticed them becoming seedless that i can say as any tomatos that drop and hit the ground or get picked at by animals i pull of and take the seeds out to save.

Very nice! I've done that one before! Keep these coming PLEASE!

Thank ya, im actually following you and enjoyed some of your posts enough to resteem them.

Great idea with he cloning!

thank ya, been playing with cloning for a few years now. i started with ten plants 4 years ago and took one clone off the best one and just keep repeating it, so this is a 4th generation clone.

I’m definitely going to try this in the fall, I wish I had some of my tomatoes from last year

it works well with more then tomatos but i decided i will do cloning posts for each one seperate as the techniques are slightly varied from plant to plant plus lets be real,it gives me more articles to gain on rather then lumping them all together

we can set up in small space in the roof top also no need big space or soil we can grow up in pot in my home i set up in small pot in roof top
