I often bury wire mesh when digging in my new beds around 2ft deep to keep these aweful rodents away. I dont have the heart for the crueler methods. And while not always fool proof it does have GREAT sucess
Exclusion is really the best method above and beyond all the others. Exclusion is preventative, not reactive like most other means. Preventative is really the best method for anything in life but takes fore thought and planning.
