Fruit beauty standards

in #gardening7 years ago

While we're all used to seeing perfect looking produce in supermarkets a lot of the food grown by the farmers doesn't meet those beauty standards and it won't make it to the shelves.
There have been initiatives to combat this waste, the French were discussing an 'ugly fruit' law and some supermarkets successfully trialled programs to combat food waste.

A lot of the produce has deformities or aesthetic problems that don't impair the taste or nutritional value of the fruit. Here's some of mine.

We've got the too small ones here. The one on the left is a cherry tomato of the Modus variety so it's not supposed to be large anyway but it is at least three times as small as any of it's brethren. The one on the right is a Kruger tomato, these are medium sized tomatoes but this one is smaller than some of the cherries I grow.

Next we have the blossom end rot and cracked/deformed tomatoes. Blossom end rot is not a disease but a disorder caused by a calcium imbalance. This can render some fruit completely unusable so it's not quite a pure aesthetic issue; usually after removing the affected bits these tomatoes are just fine to use.

And here we have some lemon cucumbers that are both too small and deformed. They're fully ripe as indicated by their yellow lemon appearance but they stayed small and odd, heh. I'm sure they'll taste just as fine as their better looking relatives.

Cheers for checking out my 'ugglies'

Sort:

I'd gladly take them off your hands, as it goes I buy deformed fruit in some stores near me as they find it difficult to shift them, taste the same and comes at a cheaper price, what's not to love!

They're going to be put to good use.
That's the way to do it! Also at the end of the trading day of the town markets you can also get great deals as well. Those overripe tomatoes/peppers they don't want to take home are perfect for soups/sauces and you can get them for almost nothing.

Cheers

I love to see the different shapes and sizes of vegetables that grow from my garden each year! Some are really quite entertaining! 😂😂 Our local supermarket also sells "Nobbly" looking veg slightly cheaper instead of throwing it out which is much better as I can never understand the logic of throwing away edible foods, at least give it to charity or make something with it and give it away! Great post!

I'd be munching on your ugglies no problem!

Here's to fresh veggies, ugly or not! cheers.

Exactly! they're all pretty to me anyway:)
