Expanding my strawberry empire
Hey,
Everyone likes strawberries, everyone.
Last spring I bought 4 strawberry plants from a garden centre and I've turned them into 25 and it's that time of the year again.
Now if you grow them in a bed, you know that you don't really have to do much for them to multiply, they'll just spread wherever they can. But I'm growing them in containers and they need a helping hand.
Most of them have already finished cropping and are starting to put out runners.
Getting them to root and creating a new plant is a really easy job. All you need to do is make sure the runner is sitting in or on some soil and you're good to go.
A few days after that and Bang! the new plant is growing and after you can see it's vigorous enough you can simply cut of the connection to the mother plant.
That's about it! My empire continues to grow and by next season I should have at least thrice as many plants as I have now.
Thanks for reading guys!

I see your strawberry runners and raise you mine.

Eight on one plant ;)
Your plant's crazy :)
youll be able to sell your own strawberry juice at this rate !
Heh, for that to happen I would need to save some for others, we've been eating them pretty quickly so far :)
Nice! What kind/variety of strawberries is this? For some reason I never really thought strawberries could be grown from clippings or runners (or that they even had runners)
Thanks!
Honestly I have no idea what variety they are, I lost the original pots since I got them. I have 3 varieties in total, 2 are unknown and the pink flowered ones you can see in the right corner of the first pic are called Toscana F1 - they're a new variety I bought this year solely because they have pink flowers and all the strawberries I've seen so far had white flowers.
I've tried growing strawberries from seed before but I didn't have much success; runners seem to be the method of choice for most people from what I've seen. They put out loads of them, I've tried cutting the runner and rooting that cutting, but it didn't work out for me so I always let it root while it's still attached to the mother plant.
For some reason, the phrase 'strawberry empire' makes me smile. :) Enjoy your berries!
Why did you plant in that form why not in the ground
My garden is quite small and fully paved, so unfortunately there is no ground to plant things in.
