Timber Frame Greenhouse Build

in #gardening8 years ago

I work as a carpenter/laborer, doing many types of jobs. Most of these jobs aren't very exciting or fun, but once in awhile I get to work on projects I like. One such project was this timber framed greenhouse. My brother had already done the foundation and the basic timber frame. Timber frames are made with traditional methods of building, using heavy timbers that are carefully fitted and joined together with joints secured by large wooden pegs--there are no nails, screws, or metal brackets holding them together! My job was to finish the greenhouse--doors, windows, siding, trim, floor, anything else the homeowner wanted.

This is where I started--basic timber frame with roofing installed. The homeowner had found some old reclaimed windows to use for the project, saving time and money. I think the old windows look better too. The smaller custom windows were made with leftover plastic roofing.

We made sure the greenhouse faced the correct direction, ensuring it got enough sun throughout the day. It was also important to have the upper window open to let out excess heat.

We used brick on the back wall of the greenhouse as a heat sink, hopefully holding onto heat for the dark hours.

For flooring we decided on decomposed granite. Tables and plant shelving came next.

Although the greenhouse was labor intensive and took a long time to complete, I really enjoyed working on it. And the homeowner loved it too! Thanks for looking!

One of my favorites. I love all the different materials, the exposed brick with the old windows. Nice build!

Awesome job. I love the well thought out design and craftsmanship. very impressive!

Nice work and well explained.

I would love to see pictures of the joinery you used. Looks like mortice and tenon with draw pins, is that right? What other types of joints did you use?

I dont have any pictures of the joinery up close, but yes, they were mortice and tenon joints with oak pegs. The rafters were just notched in with added lags.

Beautiful build. I love how neither function nor aesthetics were compromised in this project. I've never even heard of decomposed granite before! Is there power run to the greenhouse, or is the light in that last picture just from work lights?

Thanks! At the time of the photos, there was only solar power. Since then, I helped the homeowner run electric and gas to the greenhouse, he has a pottery kiln down there now too.

Wow. I'm super jealous. Not that I really need a pottery kiln (my wife might say otherwise). But it sure as hell would be fun!
