Hydroponic Setup

in #gardening8 years ago

Hi,

This setup is a bit early on in it's life, but still is doing well. Right now it has two tomato pods from a Aerogarden kit in it. I am planning on putting two mini grapes and two dwarf pomegranate in it. They just need to germinate.

For now that light works. It is full spectrum, and is what I use for all of my other plants. It just doesn't spread as much as I like.

very nice.
what are you using for your drainage ? and do you fill the entire case with water ?
do you already have any results with this setup ?
by the way
you seem to know how to water tomatoes maybe you can answer the question in the comments of my latest post about tomatoes a few minutes ago.
and maybe you want to add some potatoes as well ;)

Do you mean like an ebb and flow system with a water pump? This one is just filled all the way with water, and then has an air pump with air stones in the base providing air to the roots. Watering isn't really an issue as the roots are submerged in water all the time. I haven't had this set up long enough to get any plants past the ones in the picture, but I have done some hydroponics before, and I know several people that also have done it.

Sooner or later I would like to try one of the other types of hydroponics. This is all the room I have for it right now though.

I looked at your tomtato post. That looks pretty cool, I kind of want to try it now when summer rolls around. As for the question brought up about the watering level difference of potato and tomato plants, I don't know. They do have a care sheet on the site that sells the plants though:

ah. nice system. will check this out.

thank you for looking into it ;).
steem and grow on.

It's great to see somebody gearing up for the 2017 gardening season! That looks like a nice, tidy little system for a few plants, without taking up much space. Will you be starting your grapes and pomegranate from seed to put outdoors later? Or will you be growing them as plant starts? It will be interesting to see your tomato plants grow. With good light, they should stay short and get stocky, especially if you brush them around to encourage a strong stem, like if they were in the breeze outdoors. Happy gardening!

The pomegranates apparently only get to three feet tall, and the grapes are supposed to be compact plants also. I am going to see how they do permanently in the system. I'll probably have to start them in soil, and then transplant into the hydroponic though. They tend to mold too quickly.

This would be a great way to start plants for the spring and summer. I'd like to have one set up just for that if possible.

That would be something, to see grapes and pomegranates in a permanent hydroponic setup! Good luck with that, for sure! I look forward to seeing more from your system!

I'm sure everyone would like to know more in depth about your setup and how you go about making them etc. :) Keep up the good work.
