My little garden - Carnivorous bog

in #gardening6 years ago

And so...

I finally took the time to do some gardening this morning, i've left my garden unkempt for some time now, dried leaves and rotten leaves was a common sight by now.

Yeap.. i'm not talking regular plants and flowers, what i have here is a tiny bog garden of carnivorous plants. I found myself being interested in carnivorous plants few years back, i would watch documentary videos, and find out why they do what they do.

However, due to budget constrain for the time being, i only keep 2 plants:

  • Sarracenia - No idea what breed haha
  • Drosera  - in particular, Drosera Spatulata longleaf variant

I've had these plants since December last year, so around 5 months now... and i'm having fun so far. The weather in Malaysia can be rather cruel to them, especially if you don't have a somewhat shaded area. My plants are exposed to the hot sun for the entire day, the afternoon and evening heat can be quite a pain.

Anyways, just some general info regarding carnivorous plants:

  1. They catch insects to draw nutrients because they mainly grow in bog areas (mediums with no-little nutrients from the ground)
  2. Using tap water can be devastating to them - because of the mineral contents in the water (again, because they grow in a naturally low-nutrient area, adding water with mineral contents might burn the roots of the plant)

While there are many different species of carnivorous plants, i find myself liking the Drosera genus, Sarracenia genus as well as the Heliamphora genus.. While Nepenthes looks cool, i find the dangling-ish nature of them harder to keep :)

Anyways, here's me doing some little gardening this morning to remove all the dried leaves and rotten leaves... as well as a catch from my drosera.

P/S: Removing the dried and rotten leaves actually helps the plant to conserve energy... same goes with cutting down its flowering stalk
