Ours were doing great last year. The birds thought so too! :( We tried using painted rocks, but that didn't seem to help. But we'll try again this year. :)

If it's a small enough area, can put up a netting over it. They are pretty cheap. One year gardening the birds were digging around the garden, taking out seeds, uprooting seedlings or whatever they are called. I had to setup a cover hehe.
Yeah, we might. It's not huge, so quite possible.
